Speaking of stunts, Weekly World News pulled a fast one on tens of thousands of Facebook fans when it proclaimed the social media giant would cease operations March 15th of this year. Rest assured, status updaters, the rumor that Facebook is pulling the plug was just a fun headline. It turns out a lot of people believed it!
Where do you tweet? It is likely on-the-go from your smartphone a large percentage of the time. At CES, Twitter’s CEO said that 40 percent of all tweets are from mobile devices, up from around 20 percent to 25 percent a year ago. I can only see that number growing significantly higher.
Speaking of CES — which had its best turnout in three years — the hottest gadgets are tablets and anything 3D. Tablets, of course, were the most buzzed about items this year with many companies releasing their own versions in hopes of competing with the iPad. A tall order since iPad has 95.5% market share.
Outside tablets, CES was all about 4G and 3D. AT&T and Verizon announced 4G mobile phones. And a new slate of 3D TVs will help viewers ditch the Buddy Holly look as manufacturers previewed sleeker versions sans glasses. Confused about what 4G means? You are not alone. According to the Nielsen Company, almost half of those aware of 4G couldn’t explain it.
If you are an Apple user, check out the new Mac App Store, which with over 1,000 free and paid applications, had one million downloads on its first day. With far fewer apps than the iPhone site, think of it like an app convenience store.
If you have a philanthropic side, you will be happy to know that you can support a charity by watching YouTube videos. VisoGive aggregates pre-existing video content from non-profits and lets users watch their favorites. What causes are you passionate about?
Finally, I’d like to offer my deepest condolences to the victims of the tragedy in Tucson their families.
The REport
Happy 1/11/11! It is a numerologists dream. Not to mention a great opportunity for a marketing stunt. A new museum dedicated to the late surrealist painter Salvador Dali opened in Florida today, 1/1/11 at 11:11AM.
