USA Today released its preseason college football Top 25 coaches’ poll this week, so naturally, talk on the practice field was about … Twitter. Turns out some high profile coaches want the only tweets in their camps to be those of practice drill whistles.
At number five ranked Boise State, head coach Chris Petersen has banned his players from using Twitter. Meanwhile, on the field at number 10 ranked Iowa, defensive coordinator Norm Parker joked he could not have tweeted false retirement rumors, as he doesn’t “even know how to work the remote on the TV at home, let alone Twitter.” The tweet police are even on tackle drills at the NFL’s Cleveland Browns camp.
It’s good to be the “Mayor,” especially if you are in a Pizza Hut. The national franchise has teamed with Foursquare in a promotion that rewards the “Mayor” of each restaurant with a free single order of breadsticks with the purchase of a large pizza. This drives traffic and spreads the word about Pizza Hut locations. Can such location-based promotions benefit your office?
Looking for some social media inspiration? Look to Sir Richard Branson who is using innovative marketing tactics across his more than 360 Virgin ventures. If you have some time, play Don’t Go Zombie, an augmented reality game promoting Virgin Trains that allows you to fight zombies in the street.
A real life street fight is shaping up between Google and Facebook. Adotas reports that Google’s acquisition of apps and virtual goods creator Slide has Facebook developers working overtime ahead of a Google social network launch. What keeps you up at night about the competition?
In closing, the best way to stay up on social media is to be … well … social. Mashable just updated its Upcoming Social Media & Tech Events. I’m sure to be at a few of these, so if you see me, please come up and say hello.

Determined not to drop the ball on social media, however, is MTV who has just named Detroit-born Gabi Gregg the first-ever MTV Twitter Jockey. While it is not clear what the job responsibilities are, you can follow her and find out.
