{"id":7722,"date":"2012-01-04T16:26:44","date_gmt":"2012-01-04T21:26:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bhgrealestateblog.com\/?p=7722"},"modified":"2024-12-30T11:11:21","modified_gmt":"2024-12-30T16:11:21","slug":"declutter-and-find-focus-for-a-productive-new-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bhgrecareer.com\/bebetterblog\/declutter-and-find-focus-for-a-productive-new-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Declutter and Find Focus for a Productive New Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Focus<\/strong> <strong>is a difficult animal to wrestle<\/strong>\u00a0and especially hard to find when entering a New Year. \u00a0While a New Year provides hope and encouragement, it can also bring a need to set expectations that tend to overwhelm even the Type A personality.<\/p>\n<p>Focus, as defined by Webster is \u201c<em>a state of maximum distinctness or clarity<\/em>.\u201d \u00a0It\u2019s the optical lens in which we view our top priorities and through which we set our sights upon goals that will define our year. \u00a0<strong>Focus is a must<\/strong>, but capturing it can be elusive.<\/p>\n<p>We evolve in a business that tugs and pulls at us from every direction. Whether it\u2019s a phone call from a prospective buyer, a listing that needs updated photos, the brunch we forgot to put on our calendar or the 5 unanswered voice mails; it\u2019s apparent that <strong>finding focus<\/strong> is something we earn over time and certainly don\u2019t stumble upon without a concerted effort.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"color: #008000;font-size: x-large\">Declutter and Find Your Focus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-size: medium\">1. \u00a0Don\u2019t Stray<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Any thought that runs through your head will automatically create a physical reaction. \u00a0You will immediately feel the need to grab the phone, shoot out an email or run to your assistant\u2019s office for a \u201cquick\u201d debrief. \u00a0Whatever that thought might be, it will inevitably stray you from your focus and purpose. When you feel the need to stray from your current to-do or project, fight the urge and just STAY PUT.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><strong>\u00a0 2.\u00a0 Track Your Activities<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Track your daily activities and determine whether your day is sucking you into non-productive tasks or if you are controlling your day through planning and implementation.\u00a0 The simplest way to do this is using a tried and true method: a plain old yellow legal pad.\u00a0 Start at the beginning of your day and write down each action, task, email, phone call and interruption that takes place. Then rinse and repeat for the next three days.\u00a0 It is a guaranteed EYE opening moment for you and your business.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><strong>\u00a0 3.\u00a0 Manage Social Media &amp; Your Time Online<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>You roll into the office, hop online, read a few blogs, comment on Facebook posts, retweet your favorite tweeps when you look up at the clock to find an hour has passed.\u00a0 If this sounds familiar, you are not alone.\u00a0 We can all find ourselves sucked into the big black hole known as the World Wide Web.\u00a0 As you calendar out your day, give yourself a couple of time-outs where you can \u201cplay\u201d on the web for 10 minutes.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t trust yourself to stick with a set time, use a system like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rescuetime.com\/\">RescueTime<\/a> to monitor and analyze your time spent online.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><strong>\u00a0 4.\u00a0 Create Daily To-Do Lists<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Does your to-do list full of yellow sticky notes, loose pieces of paper and torn napkins take up a significant amount of space on your desk?\u00a0 If so, you need a to-do list intervention!\u00a0 A manageable to-do list is key to maintaining focus and productivity. There are multiple solutions to creating and maintaining an on-going and up to date to-do list.\u00a0 If you are a techie and appreciate all of the bells and whistles found on your mobile phone, tablet and laptop then <a href=\"http:\/\/tadalist.com\/\">TaDa List<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rememberthemilk.com\/\">Remember the Milk<\/a> might be your solution.\u00a0 Both of these applications are simple to-do lists that sync seamlessly between all of your devices.<\/p>\n<p>Need something basic?\u00a0 Take that yellow legal pad back out and start listing all of your to-do\u2019s in the order of importance.\u00a0 The goal is to dump everything out of your head and onto the paper.\u00a0 This means you may end up with 50 tasks.\u00a0 Not to worry\u2026you are going to start at #1 and work your way down as far as you can.\u00a0 Once your day is up, flip the page and transfer the remaining tasks to the next page.\u00a0 Doing this at the end of each day allows you to walk into the office with a road map rather than reacting to the \u201cnoise\u201d swirling around you.<\/p>\n<p>How do you <strong>maintain focus throughout your day<\/strong>?\u00a0 Is it a system you have created and implemented over the years or your diligence to sticking with the basics?\u00a0 We\u2019d love to hear from you!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Focus is a difficult animal to wrestle\u00a0and especially hard to find when entering a New Year. \u00a0While a New Year provides hope and encouragement, it can also bring a need to set expectations that tend to overwhelm even the Type A personality.
