The biggest news in social media this past week is LinkedIn\u2019s<\/a> IPO.\u00a0 The \u201cworld\u2019s largest professional network on the Internet\u201d went out at a strike price of $45 and traded above $94<\/a> on its opening day.\u00a0 The success of the first pure social networking site<\/a> IPO is sure to get the attention of rumored social network IPOs like Facebook, Groupon, Pandora and \u00a0Yelp, who are \u201call likely to go public within the next year,\u201d according to CNN<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In a glimpse of the future, Toyota, Microsoft and Salesforce.com<\/a> are embarking on an initiative that will let drivers interact with electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles through a social networking of sorts.\u00a0 “Toyota Friend\u201d<\/a> will work similar to tweets on Twitter<\/a>, in which messages will be sent from the car to the owner, with reminders to charge the battery in an electric car,<\/a> for example.<\/p>\n

The same week Bing search engine director stated \u201ctraditional search\u201d is dying, <\/a>Google announced that is has rolled out \u201csocial search\u201d<\/a> which incorporates the Facebook and Twitter posts of 19 languages into search results.<\/p>\n

Are green products full of white lies?\u00a0 As the environment becomes more important to consumers in their purchasing decisions, and more green products hit the shelves, many consumers are becoming leery that language on packaging is misleading<\/a>, a practice the Los Angeles Times<\/em> reports is being dubbed \u201cgreenwashing.\u201d<\/a> <\/em><\/p>\n

Ronald McDonald<\/a>, the face of the global fast food chain, can breathe a sign of relief as he has kept his job. \u00a0The decision came despite a letter published as a full page newspaper ad<\/a> signed by health organizations and professionals<\/a> asking McDonald\u2019s to stop marketing to children and retire the company\u2019s iconic ambassador.\u00a0 Do you think McDonald\u2019s marketing should bear any blame for the childhood obesity epidemic?<\/p>\n

Thanks to her use of social media, Lady Gaga<\/a> has surpassed Oprah Winfrey<\/a> on Forbes\u2019 Celebrity 100 list. \u00a0She earned the spot thanks to her 32 million Facebook fans and 10 million Twitter followers. (Campaigns <\/a>like those with iconic brands Starbucks<\/a>, Polaroid and Google do not hurt either).<\/p>\n

And finally, if your future plans involve flying somewhere, why not fly in style on a private jet?\u00a0 Social Flights<\/a> is a new Groupon-like site<\/a> that uses connections on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter to organize flights on private planes, for about $400 a person!<\/p>\n
