\u201cRule #13 – When put in charge\u2026take charge<\/span>\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

One thing that agents want is to have a decisive leader. Yes, they want us to hear \u2018both sides of the story\u2019 and we must be always be good listeners, but when all is said and done a decision must be sometimes be made solely by the leader. This is what General Norman Schwarzkopf refers to as Rule #13\u2026\u201dWhen put in charge, take charge.\u201d<\/p>\n

One example that comes to mind is when two agents in\u00a0a certain\u00a0office were warring over a customer that entered into a contract of sale.\u00a0The manager\u00a0sat them down and after much time, neither person would give up any ground at all. So\u00a0she told them to \u201cmeet together,\u00a0like two adults and work it out.\u201d Then\u00a0the manager\u00a0added that if they were unable to come to a decision,\u00a0she would make one,<\/span> but that in all likelihood neither of them would be happy with the outcome.<\/p>\n

One hour later the sales associates\u00a0came\u00a0to a reasonable decision. Take it for what it\u2019s worth.<\/p>\n

\u201cRule #14 – When asked to make a decision\u2026Do the right thing<\/span>\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Leaders grapple with the effects of our decisions on certain individuals, specific transactions and in our personal lives. I would propose to you a simple rule, that Schwarzkopf calls \u201cRule #14\u2026 When asked to make a decision\u2026do the right thing\u201d. Nothing more needs to be said. All of the guidelines ever written about ethics, morals and fairness are wrapped up in the ten words of Rule #14.<\/p>\n

\u2018Own\u2019 the results<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Once you have made a key decision, make sure that your people are aware that it came from you. One good example of this can be seen when redirecting agents out of the office. One suggestion would be to terminate the person late in the afternoon on the day before your office meeting, or early on the morning of the meeting. Then, as part of the meeting, announce that \u2018so and so\u2019 is no longer with the company. A simple statement like \u201cJudy and I have met several times and I have decided that we\u00a0simply do not\u00a0have a meeting of the minds on key business issues\u2026 so we wish Judy well in all of her future endeavors\u201d\u2026 would accomplish the goal very nicely.<\/p>\n

In doing this, critical points have been made although none of them were stated verbally<\/span>. The message that your agents just heard includes all of the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. The manager owns and takes responsibility for making decisions<\/li>\n
  2. The manager has standards for the office and those standards are upheld<\/li>\n
  3. My manager cares enough to deal with each person individually<\/li>\n
  4. My manager communicates key decisions with us in a timely manner<\/li>\n
  5. The manager treats others with dignity (\u201cmeeting of the minds\u2026we wish Judy well…\u201d)<\/li>\n
  6. My position here in the office is contingent upon performance (think about it)<\/li>\n
  7. I should understand that the manager seriously wants to coach me (think about it)<\/li>\n
  8. A myriad of other non-spoken critical points too numerous to list, but you get the idea.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
