Some speculated a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/id\/38917380\">renewal<\/a> would benefit buyers purchasing foreclosed properties or short sales, but be unfair to those who bought in the non-tax-credit period. Alas, <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.wsj.com\/developments\/2010\/08\/30\/ignore-talk-of-a-housing-tax-credit-revival\/\">the rumors <\/a>were put to rest, at least for now. Isn\u2019t it a little early in the season for a snowball? &#8212;<em>effect<\/em>, that is.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">On an initiative that\u2019s actually based entirely on fact, Housing Secretary Shaun Donovan announced this week the start of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/money\/economy\/housing\/2010-09-02-neighborhood02_ST_N.htm\">The First Look program<\/a> which will give <a href=\"http:\/\/marketplace.publicradio.org\/display\/web\/2010\/09\/01\/pm-hud-first-look-program-gives-communities-first-dibs-at-foreclosed-homes\/\">state and local governments <\/a>the right to buy <a href=\"http:\/\/www.inman.com\/news\/2010\/09\/2\/communities-get-first-look-many-reos\">foreclosed properties <\/a>at a one percent discount before they go on the market. The aim is to get the homes rehabilitated, rented, resold or demolished and bring \u201cmuch-needed speed&#8221; to the sale of these homes. Here\u2019s hoping this initiative significantly decreases the number of homes under water, since <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?f=\/c\/a\/2010\/09\/01\/MN891F6B62.DTL.\">new research<\/a> shows foreclosures can affect more than the wallet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">For a dose of good news, data released by the <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748703959704575453532991332448.html?mod=WSJ_RealEstate_LeftTopNews\">Mortgage Bankers Association<\/a> found that the number of U.S. households that missed consecutive mortgage payments or were in foreclosure fell more in the second quarter than any other since the mortgage crisis began four years ago. We hope this trend continues!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The company that brought us the ability to view our homes from space, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.housingwatch.com\/2010\/08\/31\/google-invests-in-low-income-housing\/\">Google<\/a>, is helping to find new homes for others by creating an $86-million <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20100830005266\/en\/U.S.-Bank-Arranges-86-Million-Low-Income-Housing\">Low-Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) fund. <\/a>The fund will subsidize the construction and operation of 480 affordable rental units in seven communities in the West and Midwest.
